About Hibiscus House

On Monday 12th November 2007 Hibiscus Hospice realised a five year dream by moving into a brand new, purpose-built facility in John Dee Crescent. This has been a mammoth undertaking and was made possible by a visionary few and the remarkable genorisity of a great many people. This wonderful new building cost $7 million and will meet the palliative care needs of the Hibiscus Coast for decades to come.

How we achieved this goal is a story in itself!

In 2002 the Hibiscus Hospice Board of Trustees established a Development Trust specifically to raise funds for a purpose built in-patient unity.

Following visits to all the recently built hospices in New Zealand the trustees commissioned Apteryx Architects to design a building that would meet the palliative care demands of the Hibiscus Coast well into the foreseeable future.

In 2004 a one-hectare site in John Dee Crescent, Red Beach, was purchased from the Peninsula Golf Club.

In April 2005 a capital campaign to raise $7 million was started. By December of that year the $6 million target was passed and two weeks short of moving in date we reached the $7m goal.

A great many people and organisations have supported the campaign for the Hibiscus Coast to have its own palliative care centre. Major donors include:

ASB Charitable Trust $1,200,000
Pub Charity $885,000
Lion Foundation $200,000
Hugh Green Trust $50,000
Orewa Rotary $25,000
Whangaparaoa Rotary $25,000
Sentinel Trust $25,000
Sunset Foundation $25,000
VMD Collier Trust $25,000
Dairy Flat Trust $20,000
Scottwood Trust $20,000
Southern Trust $20,000
Remuera Lions Club $20,000

Key features of the building include:

  • Approximately 2,500 sqm” in size
  • Located on one-hectare of land adjacent to the Peninsula Golf Course
  • Palliative care available
  • Round-the-clock nursing support
  • Fully landscaped with the aim of developing a Garden of Remembrance
  • Non-denominational chapel
  • Two meeting and training rooms
  • Library and information centre
  • Community nurse centre
  • Administration centre
  • Social support and grief centre
  • Future-proofed design to allow for long-term cost effective expansion to 12-beds
  • Designed to accommodate the needs of the Hibiscus Coast well into the foreseeable future

Initial ground work on the John Dee site was undertaken over the summer of 2005/6. In June 2006 basement work was started and the following month Cordite Construction was appointed as lead contractor. Construction started in November 2006 and completed in October 2007.

We are now in our new home!
